iHeaven

New Jerusalem, the literal “city of God” that the saved can look forward to dwelling in at the “end of time” is going to be huge. One estimate based off the measurements listed in Revelation says the city is approximately 1,500 miles by 1,500 miles by 1,500 miles (height, weight, length of equal dimensions).

Some theorize it may be in the shape of a pyramid or sphere, instead of a perfect cube… but regardless, we are talking BIG. Those measurements mean that the city is larger than the entire country of India and would extend upward into outer space, under current Earth conditions (tourofheaven.com).

In a city so big, there is plenty of opportunity for diversity. And, we are told, “many rooms” (John 14:2).

I certainly do not expect to be able to, but if I were given the opportunity to design my own personal dwelling place in heaven (based off my mortal, finite experiences so far)… here is how I would do it:

I would live in a recreation of a particular suite (the best room in the entire resort) at the Arenas del Mar hotel in Costa Rica, complete with jacuzzi on the balcony and drop-dropping ocean views from the gigantic glass windows / doors right in front of the ultra-comfy king-sized bed. I’d even go for the large, wooden ceiling fans in almost every room!

I would make only a couple of changes to the suite, redesigning a small side-room to be my writing nook and throwing some Jackson Pollock originals up on the walls for decoration. Maybe I’d set up a classic pinball machine in one corner, with the sound muted when not in use. And I would have all my favorite music (for eternity’s sake, perhaps a lot of songs off the Treme soundtrack) on indestructible vinyl records, ready to pop in and play through a crystal-clear sound system.

To take a break from writing endless nature poetry, I would walk through a rainforest path to the charming coffee plantation I designed to be nearby. Although, instead of Costa Rican coffee, which I find too acidic, the plantation produced deliciously smooth and naturally sweet Papua New Guinea varietals. I would work on the plantation for an hour or two, picking the coffee cherries, personally guiding the process of the perfect cup from start to finish. I would make a cup of coffee for God when He came over to visit.

Next, I would cool off in a refreshing swimming pool maze, towel off with a clean, fluffy towel, and take a stroll into town. There I would visit the laid-back recording studio where my friends are meeting up to rock out in a jam session, right next door to an amazing Vietnamese Pho restaurant. We make amazing and original music together, ex nihilo, one of the most pleasurable things possible to experience.

Finally, I would meet up with the graceful woman who was my wife during my brief, mortal existence back on Old Earth. We would hold hands and take a long walk on the beach of my redesigned Manuel Antonio as the sky turned all the colors of a magnificent sunset, reminiscing about when our (at the time of this writing nonexistent) kids did such and such and the love we shared. This is our ritual in my version of heaven, and even in the boundless forever we make time to honor the God-designed partnership we were stewards of in our former stage of existence.

Down In The River To Pray

Diablo III and Jesus

To the excitement of many PC gamers, Diablo III has just been released after about 12 years of waiting. For those of you who don’t know, Diablo III is the third installment (obviously) of a series of dark, roguelike/hack-and-slash/dungeon crawler computer games where you more or less descend into hell in order to kill various demonic entities and ultimately ‘Diablo’ himself/itself.

Besides the 2010 videogame ‘Dante’s Inferno’, which received a lukewarm reception, I can’t off the top of my head remember which recent videogames allow the player to descend into hell, although I imagine there were quite a few.

I’ve seen all sorts of jokes and memes popping up on the internet: “Diablo III is out, how many Koreans are going to die in cybercafes?” and “Who said gamers are fat? Now that Diablo III is out, I’m forgetting to eat” and “Diablo III? Shut up and take my money!” and “Girls, say goodbye to your boyfriends” and a great many sight gags about ‘Error 37′.

Well, what if I told you that Jesus Christ once descended into hell? Not in a fantasy videogame world, but in reality.

I’m not talking about the Lake of Fire at the end of time, but about the pre-Final Judgment underworld, so to speak, as it exists currently. Now, for you learned theologians out there, please… PLEASE correct me if I misguided here, but let’s look at the scriptural evidence:

JESUS TOOK ON OUR SINS

1. Peter 2:24a – “…He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross…”

2. Isaiah 53:4b – “…the punishment that brought us peace was upon him…”

3. Matthew 27:46 – “About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” that is, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”"

At the cross, it seems that Jesus bore in His body the past, present and future sins of all mankind, and the corresponding punishment. What an incredibly heavy burden to bear, especially for somebody without sin! Because of the great darkness and evil, it seems that God the Father had to actually distance Himself from Jesus for a time.

This reminds me of Paul’s statement in Romans 9:3 that he could wish that he was accursed and separated from Christ for the sake of his brethren.

Now, the Bible tells us that the wages of sin is death. I don’t know what other unit of measure to possibly use to calculate sin, so let’s just whimsically say for the sake of math that a single sin is worth one DU (death unit). I saw one estimate last year that said there have been a total of 108 billion human beings born throughout existence. The current average life expectancy across the planet is 67.2 years. Let’s pretend that people sin only an average of 5 times per day. I really have no clue about this number, but 5 is great for multiplication purposes. 365 days x 67.2 years x 108 billion human beings x 5 sins.

That comes to 13,245,120,000,000,000 units of sin… wow. And in reality probably much more than that. I’m sure there have been days that I have sinned 100 times, meaning a hundred single instances of violating God’s law. So let’s imagine that mind-numbing, soul-crushing weight of darkness coming undeservedly upon the perfect, sinless Son of God.

JESUS DIED AND SPENT THREE DAYS IN THE GROUND

Jesus died on the cross and was buried. Although he lived a perfect and sinless life, he took on the sins of all mankind. When somebody dies, they either go to Paradise/Heaven or Hades/Sheol, as the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus illustrates.

1. Luke 16:22-23 – “Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s side; and the rich man also died and was buried. In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus at his side.”

Logically, if you die while bearing the sins of all mankind, there is only one place you can go. And it isn’t Heaven.

2. Ephesians 4:9 – “Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth?”

Now perhaps Jesus died and did go to Heaven for those three days until His resurrection. He did, after all, say to the thief of the cross beside him that “today you will be with me in Paradise.” Jesus is God and can do whatever he wants, he could perhaps even could go back and forth as he pleased… BUT, 1 Peter 3 tells us of a very interesting event and, comparing scripture with scripture, it seems that after the crucifixion would be the logical time that this occurred.

JESUS MAKES AN APPEARANCE IN THE NETHERWORLD

1. 1 Peter 3:18-20 – “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.”

Where else can spirits in prison be but Hell/Hades/Sheol? As 2 Peter tells us…

2. 2 Peter 2:4 – “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment…”

The Bible talks about the Abyss / the Bottomless Pit where various demonic entities are locked away, awaiting judgment. See also Jude 1:6, Luke 8:13, Revelation 20:3, etc. I don’t know if this is the same place where the spirits of sinful men go, perhaps not. 2 Peter 2:4 uses the greek word tartaroō; some say ‘tartarus.’

Maybe Tartarus/Abyss/Bottomless Pit is one such prison for fallen angels, and Hades/Sheol/Gehenna is another prison from human spirits. I don’t know. The dungeon/prison imagery used is quite similar. Ultimately both rebellious angels and rebellious humans face the same Lake of Fire destination.

Gamers playing Diablo descend into a horrific netherworld to battle demons. Jesus did something a little different. He went and preached! Those who seemingly never had a chance to respond to the gospel, living in a pre-Abrahamic / pre-Moasic / pre-Jesus world, had a chance to make a decision with eternal consequences. Did Jesus suffer agony and torment in Hell? I would say… HECK NO! He was on a rescue mission.

JESUS ON A RESCUE MISSION

1. Ephesians 4:8 – “Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.”"

These captives and the spirits in prison could very easily be the same. It seems that Jesus proclaimed the gospel to the disobedient spirits in prison, and then brought the ones who responded with Him to Heaven when He ascended.

God vs. President Obama

God is more real to me than President Obama.

I’ve read about the President, and I’ve heard people talk about him… but I’ve never met him.

President Obama doesn’t know that I exist. God knows everything about me, even things that I myself don’t yet know. I have never spoken to President Obama or heard from him. He has never communicated with me in any way. I have never had any interaction with him. I have never given President Obama anything and he has never given anything to me.

Although I have every reason to believe that President Obama exists… God is just so much more a part of my objective, undeniable reality.

An Anchor for My Soul

The 1997 movie Titanic was recently re-released in 3D, in honor of making more money the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, and perhaps helped along by a boost in public awareness of the Titanic following Season One of Downton Abbey. The movie has now made a total of $2,183,402,498+ worldwide.

Are we that fascinated with shipwrecks? Or is it Leo we can’t get enough of? Shipwrecks certainly are disastrous events, and like rubbernecking commuters perhaps we can’t help but gawk at the wreckage as we pass by.

I’ve never been in a shipwreck, but the Apostle Paul was shipwrecked three times! I dinged a pontoon boat on Lake Havasu once, if that counts for anything. And I’ve been in a couple fender-benders…

What can be equally (if not more) tragic than such calamities is when somebody’s faith gets shipwrecked.

1 Timothy 1:18-19 – This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight, keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.

If we reject the keeping of the faith and do not maintain a good conscience, our faith can be shipwrecked. In the very next verse in that chapter, we learn that two individuals were “handed over to Satan” so that they would be taught not to blaspheme. Yikes! We don’t want that.

People said the Titanic was unsinkable. It wasn’t. Can we make our faith unsinkable? I think so. But right now let’s look at a way to at least make our faith more waterproof; a way to avoid being shipwrecked.

Hebrews 6:9-20 – But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way. For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints. And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, “I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU.” And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an ANCHOR OF THE SOUL, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

We need to keep our eyes on the prize. Do not expect this life to be perfect or free from suffering and trial. We are not in Heaven yet! This fallen world is not paradise, and it will not become utopia. There is more. There is an inheritance, and a promise, and wonderful rewards for those who love His name and work for His glory. We will be blessed both in this life, and much more in the age to come.

Let that hope anchor your soul in the midst of the storm. Hold fast with patience as you feel the wind and the waves. Turn to Jesus.

The Heavens Declare

According to the source of all some knowledge, Wikipedia (and a NASA scientist), the total estimated mass-energy of the observable universe is 4×1069 Joules.

Compare this to 9×103 Joules for the energy in a single AA alkaline battery or 2.1×1017 Joules for a 50-ton hydrogen bomb, the largest nuclear weapon ever tested.

Now I’m a soft-science guy. But if you understand math then you understand the magnitude of the energy in the universe. And God created that universe. Easily.

We can only deduce that God Himself contains exponentially, unimaginably more energy or potential energy than 4×1069 Joules, if He can make, unmake and otherwise bend all of creation to His will without breaking a sweat. Or perhaps the measure of God’s energy is qualitatively different and truly outside our mortal, human understanding of physics.

Either way, I am humbled. I am like a cheap, science fair potato-battery in comparison to His power.

God’s Court Room

The Bible describes Satan/Lucifer/The Devil as being an accuser and an adversary. He is basically a really nasty PROSECUTOR who has it out for us.

These verses from Revelation 12 reflect this:

And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night.

Satan spends a lot of time in Heaven literally bad-mouthing us  to God. Day and night! I mean… what a freakin’ jerk!

Here is a close-up from history where we see the accuser in action, found in the book of Job:

Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD. The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” The LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man fearing God and turning away from evil. And he still holds fast his integrity, although you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause.” Satan answered the LORD and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life. However, put forth Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse You to Your face.”

Not only does Satan try to point out our faults… but he tries to find things that may potentially be wrong with us, even when we have done nothing wrong! Not only that, but the devil actually instigates harm, disease and tragedy in our lives as the book of Job attests.

Thankfully, we as Christians have a really amazing DEFENSE ATTORNEY named Jesus Christ.

1 John 2:1My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense–Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

Romans 8:34Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

1 Timothy 2:5 - For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

Now we all know that lawyers can be very expensive. What payment does Jesus require to be our advocate and defense attorney in the face of Satan’s accusations against us?

Matthew 10:32 - So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven,

And, wonderfully, we have a DEFENSE ATTORNEY who can actually relate to our experiences and our shortcomings. He is not some aloof, grey poupon eating country club member who draws a paycheck from our misery.

Hebrews 4:15 - For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet was without sin.
